SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN)— Sacramento Fire Department firefighter Stephen Mayer thought he was simply returning to Station 6 after a call this week. Instead, he arrived to find the station filled with family, friends and fellow firefighters celebrating his promotion to battalion chief.

According to the Sacramento Fire Department, some of those attending traveled from out of state, while others represented different chapters of Mayer’s life and career.

Mayer, who was born and raised in Queens, New York, began his fire service career in 1995 when he joined the Fire Reserve Program.

The department announced and celebrated Mayer’s promotion Tuesday, recognizing his more than three decades in the fire service.

Mayer also holds a place in Sacramento Fire Department history as the first department member featured in its award-winning “I AM SACRAMENTO FIRE” video series.

The Sacramento Fire Department congratulated Mayer on his promotion and the latest chapter of his fire service career.
