SACRAMENTO COUNTY(PSN) — A man died after becoming unresponsive shortly after sheriff’s deputies detained him during a reported assault Tuesday evening on Hillsdale Boulevard, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the 5400 block of Hillsdale Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3. A caller initially reported that a man had struck his vehicle with his hand. The call was later updated to report that the same man had forced his way into a nearby residence and was physically assaulting a resident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies arrived about three minutes after the initial call and found the man on the ground, being physically restrained by the resident and the caller. The agency said the man was screaming incoherently and that deputies placed him in handcuffs without incident.
Shortly after being detained, the man became unresponsive. Deputies began lifesaving measures and requested an emergency response from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. Fire personnel continued those efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators learned that the caller had been driving through the area when the man struck his vehicle. The caller turned around and saw the man banging on a nearby home’s door before a physical altercation with the resident, the agency said.
The resident told deputies the man forced his way into the home, but he was able to push him outside. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the altercation continued in the front yard, where the man reportedly struck the resident in the head multiple times.
The resident sustained superficial injuries and said he did not need medical attention. The caller intervened and helped restrain the man on the ground until deputies arrived, the agency said.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division will investigate the in-custody death, which the agency described as standard practice. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. The man was not identified in the release, and the investigation remains ongoing.
