NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. (PSN) — Firefighters contained an early morning commercial structure fire at a church in North Highlands on Monday, preventing more extensive damage to the building, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Crews were dispatched at approximately 2:21 a.m. to the 5600 block of Hillsdale Boulevard after reports of a fire at a church property, Sacramento Metro Fire spokesperson Capt. Mark Nunez said in a media release.

Arriving firefighters observed flames burning on the exterior of the building that had extended into a classroom area of the church. Crews deployed hose lines and worked to contain the fire to the front portion of the structure while conducting a primary search to confirm no occupants or victims were inside.

No injuries were reported.

According to Metro Fire, neighbors who noticed the fire in its early stages quickly called 911, allowing firefighters to respond rapidly and help minimize damage to the church.

Metro Fire’s Investigation Team remained on scene Monday morning and is conducting an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.

Fire officials also reminded residents that fires can double in size every minute and urged the public to evacuate immediately in the event of a fire, remain outside and call 911 from a safe location.
