SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — A Sacramento security guard has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during a commercial burglary investigation earlier this month in south Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Police said officers responded just after 4:30 a.m. May 8 to reports of a burglary in progress at a business in the 8500 block of Thys Court. Additional callers also reported a shooting at the location.
Responding officers located an adult male burglary suspect suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by fire personnel, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the investigation, a second adult male burglary suspect arrived at an area hospital suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Police said the suspect was reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators said a security guard employed at the business remained at the scene and was initially detained by officers.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the investigation, processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
According to Sacramento police, investigators later obtained a voluntary manslaughter arrest warrant for 55-year-old Joseph Mills of Sacramento. Mills was arrested May 19 on the warrant, along with weapons-related charges, and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
