SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — Motorists traveling through Sacramento this weekend should prepare for significant traffic impacts as Caltrans schedules a 28-hour full closure of northbound Capital City Freeway (State Route 51/Business 80) at the American River Bridge as part of the ongoing American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
According to Caltrans District 3, the closure is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Friday, May 29, and continue until 3 a.m. Sunday, May 31. During the closure, northbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 will be completely closed from N Street to Exposition Boulevard while crews apply a polyester concrete overlay to the bridge deck.
Caltrans officials stated the extended closure is necessary to allow adequate curing time for the polyester concrete surface.
Southbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 will remain open throughout the project.

Several ramps and freeway connectors within the work zone will also be closed, including:
- Northbound P Street on-ramp
- Northbound J Street on-ramp
- Northbound E Street on-ramp
- Eastbound U.S. Highway 50 to northbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 connector
- Westbound U.S. Highway 50 to northbound Capital City Freeway/Business 80 connector
The American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project is a major infrastructure investment valued at approximately $239.5 million and is designed to improve the long-term safety and reliability of one of the Sacramento region's busiest transportation corridors.
Caltrans is advising motorists to avoid the area, allow additional travel time, and utilize alternate routes throughout the weekend closure period.
Motorists are encouraged to check roadway conditions before traveling and plan accordingly.
