SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (PSN)— One person was killed and another critically injured Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle struck a power pole and caught fire near El Camino Avenue and Verna Way, according to reports.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched to the area for a reported vehicle collision and arrived to find a single vehicle that had struck and sheared a power pole before catching fire.
Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and began providing emergency medical care to the occupants.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second patient suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The collision also brought down electrical lines, creating what Metro Fire described as a significant hazard for emergency crews. Firefighters coordinated with Sacramento Municipal Utility District personnel, who secured power and de-energized the electrical lines so rescue operations could safely continue.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes while emergency crews remained at the scene.
