SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — A homicide investigation is underway after a reported stabbing early Tuesday morning at McClatchy Park left one person dead and another in police custody, according to police radio traffic and observations by Public Safety News crews at the scene.
At approximately 12:22 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department received a 911 call from a man reporting he was being attacked by another individual armed with a pole. According to police radio traffic, the caller also advised dispatchers that he had a knife in his right pocket and was reaching for it.
Officers responding to the park detained one individual and located a second person suffering from multiple stab wounds in the baseball field area, according to police radio reports.
An officer immediately advised over the radio that CPR had begun and requested the Sacramento Fire Department and Sacramento Fire Department paramedics respond Code 3.
Public Safety News crews arrived simultaneously with fire and EMS personnel and observed firefighters and paramedics from Engine 6 and Medic 6 retrieving medical equipment before making their way to the baseball diamond.
A short time later, emergency personnel returned to the ambulance without transporting anyone on a gurney. Crews cleaned and stowed their equipment before clearing the scene.
While authorities have not yet officially confirmed a death, those observations, combined with the subsequent arrival of Sacramento Police Crime Scene Investigators and homicide detectives, indicate the victim was likely pronounced dead at the scene.
Throughout the early morning hours, multiple Crime Scene Investigation personnel documented the scene and collected evidence while patrol officers canvassed the surrounding area. Homicide detectives later arrived, gathered in the park's parking lot for an investigative briefing, and then dispersed throughout the crime scene to begin their respective investigative assignments.
During the investigation, Sacramento Fire Department personnel returned to evaluate the detained individual, who complained of back pain. The individual was transported to a local hospital while remaining in police custody.
At the time Public Safety News departed the scene, investigators remained actively processing evidence. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office had not yet arrived.
The Sacramento Police Department has not yet released an official media statement regarding the incident, and the circumstances leading up to the apparent stabbing remain under investigation.
Public Safety News will update this story as additional and official information becomes available from the Sacramento Police Department.
