SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento office is warning drivers and spectators about the dangers and potential legal consequences associated with illegal street racing and sideshows.
In a public safety message titled “Think Before You Spin,” CHP officials said street racing and sideshows put participants, motorists, pedestrians and spectators at risk of serious injury or death. The activities can also disrupt neighborhoods, damage property and create hazards on public roadways.
CHP warned that participating in illegal sideshow activity can result in a vehicle being impounded for 30 days, as well as citations, arrest, criminal charges and fines.
The agency emphasized that spectators can also face consequences. According to CHP, people attending an illegal sideshow may be cited or arrested, and their vehicles may be subject to impoundment.
CHP also cautioned that leaving before officers arrive does not necessarily prevent subsequent enforcement action. People involved in sideshow activity may still be identified, investigated and prosecuted after the event.
“The consequences simply aren't worth it,” CHP said in its message.
The agency said CHP officers and other law enforcement agencies will continue using available enforcement resources to identify people responsible for illegal street racing and sideshow activity.
Members of the public who witness illegal sideshow activity are encouraged to report it when it is safe to do so.
