SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At least one person is dead after a vehicle struck pedestrians who were stopped along eastbound Highway 50 with a blown-out tire late Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported at approximately 11:36 p.m. on eastbound Highway 50, just east of the Highway 99 transition near 34th Street.
According to CHP information, three pedestrians were outside a vehicle along the right-hand shoulder after experiencing a blown-out tire when a passing vehicle struck members of the group.
CHP subsequently classified the collision as a fatality. At least one person was killed, and the Sacramento County Coroner's Office was notified shortly before 12:50 a.m.
Information regarding the conditions of the other pedestrians was not immediately available.
The collision prompted an extensive closure of eastbound Highway 50 while CHP investigated. The No. 3 and No. 4 lanes and the 34th Street off-ramp were initially closed, while a flare pattern was established to direct motorists around the scene.
PSN observed multiple CHP officers and highway workers operating within the closure.
The investigation and cleanup continued into early Monday morning, with lanes gradually reopening.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
