SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — Two suspects are in custody following a shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Sacramento. The incident, which took place near 3rd and K Street around 3 a.m., resulted in two victims being transported to local hospitals.

Officer Anthony Gamble, Public Information Officer with the Sacramento Police Department, provided an update on the situation. "We are proud to announce that we do have two suspects in custody related to this shooting," Gamble said during a media briefing. "Our officers did locate two victims on scene. One was a 17-year-old victim, the other was an 18-year-old victim."

The 17-year-old victim remains in critical condition, while the 18-year-old is listed in stable condition. Due to the severity of the younger victim's injuries, homicide and felony assault detectives were called in to lead the investigation, alongside crime scene investigators.

"Our detectives will be collecting evidence, speaking to witnesses, and really trying to dive into what occurred earlier this morning," said Gamble. Investigators will also be reviewing footage from the city's public safety camera network in the area. "We have a tremendous working relationship with the Downtown Commons, and there are a lot of cameras as part of our public safety network," Gamble explained. "Our detectives will be sifting through video very intently to identify any and all suspects involved."

While the shooting was a tragic event, Gamble stressed that it does not reflect the overall safety of downtown Sacramento. "It's important to also note that while this incident happened, last night there were thousands of people that came downtown, went to concerts, went to restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shopping, and they were just fine," Gamble said. "This is not a representation of all of downtown."

In response to the shooting, the police department is increasing its presence in the area. "We will be increasing our staffing in the Downtown Commons area throughout the weeks and on days of high traffic," Gamble said. "We will be having additional resources out there as well."

The Sacramento Police Department is committed to addressing such incidents and ensuring the safety of the public. "We want to remind people that if you come downtown, specifically in this area, there are cameras everywhere," Gamble warned. "We will review those cameras, we will identify you, and we will find you. We're not tolerating this type of behavior in our city."

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward. "If anybody has any information regarding this shooting, please contact us at 916-808-5471," Gamble stated. "You can remain anonymous through the P3 Tips app as well."

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as details emerge.
