SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A residential garage fire spread into a home Saturday morning in the 8800 block of Lemas Avenue, prompting a multi-agency response and the rescue of several animals, authorities said.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded at about 7:36 a.m. to reports of a structure fire. Crews arriving on scene found a well-involved garage fire that had extended into the interior of the residence.
Firefighters from the Sacramento Fire Department and Cosumnes Fire Department assisted in the response.
Initial access to the scene was impacted by road closures near Lemas Avenue and Elk Grove-Florin Road, but crews were able to reach the home and begin an aggressive fire attack while conducting a primary search for occupants.
Fire personnel were advised that two dogs and a terrarium containing reptiles remained inside the home. Crews located and rescued the animals, reuniting them with the homeowners.
The residents had already evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival after being alerted by a working smoke alarm, officials said.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire officials reminded residents of the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms, advising monthly testing and annual battery replacement.
