SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — Federal immigration enforcement activity by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Sacramento County on Thursday morning sparked a series of 911 calls and public concern, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 7:47 a.m., the Sheriff’s Communications Center received an incomplete emergency call reporting a group of armed and masked individuals in the parking lot of the Home Depot on Florin Road. Deputies responded and found no immediate threat in the area. While on scene, they were flagged down by a woman who reported her husband may have been arrested.
Minutes later, at 7:51 a.m., Border Patrol notified the Sheriff’s Office that they were conducting an enforcement operation in the area — a step considered courteous but not required when federal agencies act outside their usual jurisdictions.
A second 911 call was received at 7:57 a.m. from a resident on the 4500 block of A Parkway. The caller said a neighbor believed someone was breaking into his home. Deputies determined that the individuals entering the residence were federal agents from Border Patrol executing immigration enforcement actions.
Sheriff’s officials emphasized that no deputies were involved in the federal operation. Under California law — specifically Senate Bill 54, also known as the California Values Act — local law enforcement agencies are prohibited from engaging in immigration enforcement duties.
“The Sheriff’s Office does not serve as an immigration enforcement agency,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Amar Gandhi. “Our Deputies remain committed to protecting all residents of Sacramento County, and we strongly encourage anyone to report crimes or suspicious activity, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status.”
The Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed how many individuals were detained or the nature of the federal enforcement operation. U.S. Border Patrol has not yet issued a public statement regarding the activity.
